Complete Guide to Indonesia SNI Certification
Household Appliances / Building Materials / Automotive Parts / IT Equipment / Cosmetics and Other Industrial Products Must Meet Indonesian Market Entry Requirements
1. Understanding SNI
SNI (Standar Nasional Indonesia) is a mandatory national standard certification formulated and managed by the Indonesian National Standardization Agency (BSN). It covers various categories including industrial products and consumer goods. Controlled products that fail to pass SNI certification are prohibited from being sold or circulated in the Indonesian market.
1.1 Which Products Require SNI Certification?
| Category | Specific Products |
|---|---|
| Household Appliances | Refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines, rice cookers, electric kettles |
| Building Materials | Reinforced steel, cement, tiles, glass, pipes |
| Automotive Parts | Tires, brake pads, batteries, spark plugs |
| IT Equipment | Mobile phones, laptops, chargers, power adapters |
| Cosmetics | Skincare lotions, hair dye, shower gel, toothpaste (high-risk categories) |
| Machinery and Tools | Welding machines, water pumps, generators, electric tools |
- Low-risk daily necessities (such as plastic tableware) can undergo simplified registration and do not require the full SNI certification process.
- Purely imported equipment for personal use (not for sale) does not require SNI certification but requires proof of personal use.
1.2 Types of SNI Certification
| Certification Type | Applicable Products | Validity Period |
|---|---|---|
| SNI Mandatory | High-risk industrial products (e.g., appliances/building materials) | 5 years |
| SNI Voluntary | Low-risk consumer goods | No fixed validity period (registration system) |
| SNI Import | Imported controlled products | 5 years |
| SNI Local Production | Locally produced products in Indonesia | 5 years |
| SNI Cosmetics | Imported/local cosmetics (high risk) | 3 years |
II. Certification Process & Core Basic Information
Data Collection and Verification
Preparation StagePrepare Indonesian local agent/company information, product technical documents, and factory qualification documents (ISO/production license).
Product Testing and Sample Submission
15-30 working daysSend product samples to BSN-accredited laboratories for compliance testing and obtain test reports conforming to SNI standards.
Submission of Application Documents
5-10 working daysSubmit test reports, application forms, product specifications, and other documents to BSN, completing the online system declaration.
Review and Factory Inspection
20-40 working daysBSN reviews the documents and conducts on-site factory inspections if necessary (e.g., high-risk electrical/building materials products).
Certificate Issuance and Registration
5-15 working daysUpon approval, obtain the SNI certificate and complete product registration; certificate information can be verified on the BSN official website.

3. SNI certification label requirements
General requirements
- It must be usedIndonesian(English copy can be retained)
- Display the SNI certification number and BSN identifier
- Product models, specifications, and production batches are clearly visible
- Manufacturer name and address (Indonesian notation)
Special restrictions
- Household appliances: Voltage (220V), power, and safety warning statements must be indicated
- Building materials: Strength grade, production date, and shelf life (such as cement) must be indicated.
- Auto parts: Strictly prohibited from labeling "original factory equivalent" or other misleading descriptions
Format and violation explanations
-
Format standardized
Clear and legible information, font size not less than 3mm, and clear color contrast with the background; SNI labels must be printed according to BSN proportions; High-risk categories must include product traceability codes; Blurring or altering SNI numbers is prohibited
-
Violation penalties
Missing or incorrect labels: maximum fine of 300 million rupiah (about 135,000 RMB), product seizure/destruction; Misuse of SNI marks can result in 1-5 years imprisonment and placement on the BSN blacklist
